Liverpool Knowledge Quarter; An Innovation Distric

Paddington Village

Paddington Village is a £1 billion flagship expansion site sitting at the eastern gateway to the City Centre and is part of the local authority’s vision to cement the city region as an international destination of significance for the life-science, healthcare, and technology industries. The 1.8 million square foot site is being built in three phases: Paddington Central, Paddington South, and Paddington North, with phase one now underway. Paddington is a major urban village, measuring 30 acres, and was inspired by the sense of community seen in New York’s Greenwich Village. With state-of-the-art workspaces, labs, cafés, restaurants, shops, accommodation, a hotel, and teaching, examination, and events space, it will not only be a fantastic place to live but also a terrific location to work, discover, and socialise.

Upper Central

This area will be converted into a bustling section of the city, with new shops, offices, galleries, pubs, restaurants, gyms, and university space, thanks to the Mayor of Liverpool’s support. The idea for Upper Central is no less ambitious than those for London’s Kings Cross. The new commercial area for IT and digital firms, as well as futuristic educational space, will be a crucial component of Upper Central. This wonderful commercial location in the centre of Liverpool is about two hours by rail from London.

The City is developing a Spatial Regeneration Framework (SRF) for the Gateway in collaboration with KQ partners, in order to expedite the completion of this major project and improve the arrival experience for tourists and commuters entering the city. Upper Central’s regeneration, which has already begun with the Ion scheme on Lime Street and Liverpool John Moores University’s demolition of the former sorting office on Copperas Hill, will serve as a catalyst for much-needed investment in technology and education, as well as creating a new green, accessible environment between the Knowledge Quarter and the rest of the City Centre.

Fabric District

Islington, the industrial enclave between London Road and New Islington, is about to undergo a major change, and we will see it reclaim its reputation as a dynamic part of Liverpool City Centre and reclaim its economic potential. A group of local stakeholders, businesses, and property owners have been brought together with the goal of pushing redevelopment from the ground up, and Islington has been rebranded as Liverpool’s Fabric District, a nod to the area’s active, rich past as the city’s rag trade centre. Fabric District will increase the City Centre offering by integrating these parts of Liverpool with the residential districts of North Liverpool, creating a collaborative and active sector of the city covering daytime and night-time economies catering to the Knowledge Quarter.

The Spine

The Spine, Liverpool’s new flagship building, stands proudly at the corner of Paddington Village, demonstrating our desire to make KQ Liverpool a world-leading innovation centre. The 14-story, 160,000-square-foot structure will not only be BREEAM Excellent certified, but also one of the first in the UK to receive WELL Standard Certification, making it one of the greatest workplaces for mental and physical health.

Named after the striking staircase that runs up the north elevation of the building, The Spine’s lower and upper floors will be occupied by the prestigious Royal College of Physicians, who are opening their new Northern Centre of Excellence in summer 2020, with the remainder of the building available to pre-let to other health, science, and education-focused occupiers.

Although the top four floors will be home to the RCP, there will be an internal sky garden, complete with high oxygen producing plants and spaces suitable for fine dining and events, which will be available for private hire.

Liverpool Science Park

In the heart of KQ Liverpool, Liverpool Science Park now offers over 120,000 square feet of high-end office and commercial laboratory space. The Innovation Centre 1’s newest wing, which opened in March 2014, offers 40,000 square feet of space and eleven new commercial laboratories, as well as fit-for-purpose write-up lodging, office space, and conference spaces.

Accelerator

Accelerator is a £25 million initiative between the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Trust and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine that supports enterprises via collaboration, innovation, and investment on the Liverpool Health Campus. Accelerator is a brand-new facility with roughly 30,000 square feet of lettable space that has state-of-the-art laboratories, including category 3 labs, insectaries, offices, collaboration zones, conference spaces, and a café. It is at the heart of Liverpool’s plan to build a city-centre health facility. The Accelerator promotes the commercialization of health and life science research by facilitating information transfer among executives, clinicians, key opinion leaders, and academics. The proximity of the early phase clinical trial unit and the Liverpool Biobank provides enterprises with additional research and development options.

Sensor City

Sensor City, located at the entrance of KQ Liverpool, is the UK’s focus area for sensor technology innovation and development. It is a University Enterprise Zone that is pushing the envelope of innovation, accelerating company growth, and creating new employment. Sensor City is building a vibrant and supportive community by providing facilities, business assistance, and hands-on technical knowledge to entrepreneurs, SMEs, and established organisations looking to transform their ideas into economically viable solutions. With a variety of suites, conference rooms, hot desks, and breakout areas, as well as a dedicated events space with outdoor terrace, Sensor City provides an atmosphere where firms interested in the development of sensors and IoT may thrive, regardless of how individuals prefer to work. Sensor City is a completely unique location for sensor-related research and IoT development because of its in-house laboratories, which provide the most cutting-edge technology, some of which is not accessible anywhere else in the UK.

Materials Innovation Factory

Gain a competitive advantage in your industry or improve the speed and efficiency of your study. Unilever and the University of Liverpool collaborated on the £68 million Materials Innovation Factory. It is one of the most interesting developments of its sort in recent years, uniting one of the largest research-active firms with the greatest chemistry department in the UK. Long-term Research Hotel residences for up to seven individuals are available, allowing you to co-locate your research teams with our experts on site.

IDEAS (University of Liverpool’s Institute for Digital Engineering and Autonomous Systems)

In the fields of autonomous systems, robotics, data analytics, and artificial intelligence, the University of Liverpool’s Institute for Digital Engineering and Autonomous Systems (IDEAS) will co-locate world-class academic research and industrial application. IDEAS will significantly connect these areas of study with our expertise in assisting with the implementation of innovative technologies in collaboration with our partners and external commercial organisations. We will work together to use new research and approaches in order to accelerate corporate growth via the use of digital technology and industrial digitalisation.
The Institute will work with and assist a variety of local organisations from a variety of industries and locations in order to maximise prospects for innovation and contribute to economic growth, sustainability, and improved quality of life. Through the dissemination of research and information exchange between academia and business, IDEAS will help shape the digital skills of the future. The University of Liverpool’s Digital Strategy 2026, which builds on our strengths in world-leading research and impact initiatives, supports this effort.
